Hat Trick - Recap: Miami GP 2025
Oscar Piastri won his third straight race as McLaren dominated a thrilling weekend in Miami.
Lando Norris won a rainy Sprint on Saturday, lucking his way past Oscar after a well-timed Safety Car. Max qualified on pole for Sunday’s race with Lando starting P2.
Fight at the Front
Lando pulled alongside Max into Turn 1 to challenge, but couldn’t get past and went off track, falling to P6.
Oscar overtook Kimi Antonelli early to take P2 and set his sights on Max.
Lando passed George for P4, then Kimi for P3 in quick succession and the top three began to pull away.
Oscar caught Max within a few laps and pulled within DRS range, but Max successfully defended the first three overtake attempts.
On Lap 14, Oscar approached Turn 1 with his best chance so far and faked an attempt to the outside.
Max locked up attempting to defend down the inside and Oscar eased past into the lead. It was a brilliant and composed move from the 24-year old challenger.
The prolonged fight helped Lando Norris catch up, and Lando mounted his own challenge on Verstappen a few laps later.
Max held Lando off with fierce defense for three laps as Lando pulled alongside and failed to pass multiple times.
Lando got by at Turn 11 on Lap 17, but left the track in the attempt and was at risk of a penalty. He gave Max the position back to avoid a penalty, then overtook him once and for good into Turn 1 on the next lap.
Oscar built a nine-second gap while his teammate and Max battled behind, and Lando was unable to close it down the stretch despite a valiant effort and posting the fastest lap of the race.
Oscar extends his small lead in the driver’s and McLaren extends their massive lead in the constructor’s with a double 1-2 weekend.
Down the Grid
Max finished P4 and continues to carry his team by wringing every possible ounce of performance out of the Red Bull.
By race end, the McLarens were 30 seconds up the road from any other car. All that pace, and it still took each of them three laps to pass Max.
Yuki Tsunoda scored the final point in P10. He’s doing much better than Liam did, which is probably good for now, but how vindicating does this season look for Sergio Perez so far?
Mercedes had another great team weekend, and Kimi Antonelli broke out with a pole position in the Sprint.
George Russell had a tough weekend of qualifying but got to P4 with a steady race and an overtake on his teammate. A late Safety Car helped him jump Max Verstappen to steal P3 and another podium.
Kimi finished P6 in the race, but stole the show on Saturday qualifying P1 for the sprint. At 18, he’s the youngest driver ever to start at the front of the grid for an F1 event.
Williams had a massive day as Alex Albon finished P5 and Carlos Sainz P9.
Albon put an exclamation point on his wonderful start to the season by overtaking Antonelli for P5 late in the race.
Carlos Sainz is looking better every week and was fighting wheel to wheel with the Ferraris.
Ferrari scored double points, but finished P7/P8 and continues to give bad vibes.
They don’t seem to have the pace, and neither driver seems particularly happy with the team.
Lewis Hamilton asked the team to let him pass teammate Charles Leclerc late because Lewis believed he had the pace to chase down Kimi Antotelli ahead. They did, but Lewis was unsuccessful and they eventually asked him to give the position back.
After the swapback, Lewis’ engineer reminded him that Carlos Sainz was 1.4 seconds behind and Lewis had a cheeky reply.
