McLaren is in control while the battle for second takes shape behind them.
The Circuit
Nestled on an island park in the heart of Montreal, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is the prettiest temporary street circuit on the F1 calendar.
Straight-line speed is key here with long straights and slow corners.
The famous “Wall of Champions” is a tight wall on the right-hand side of the final chicane that has claimed numerous world champions over the years.
The Lap
Turns 1-2 combine for a tricky, slow complex where cars are likely to stack up on Lap 1.
The middle sector opens on the first DRS straight and ends with a critical DRS detection point. Drivers within DRS range here will get the advantage for both of the final DRS zones of the lap (even if they pass the car in front before the second zone).
The final sector starts with a slow hairpin that exits onto the fastest stretch of the track with two consecutive DRS zones and only the wall of champions chicane to slow them in between.
The most likely overtake spots will be Turn 13 and Turn 1 at the middle and end of this long final section.
Top of Mind
Losing the flexible wings did nothing to slow McLaren last week. Oscar Piastri will be looking to continue his dominant first half and build up the gap to teammate Lando Norris in second.
Ferrari has been trending up and their strength in low-speed corners could translate well to the Montreal track.
After his incident with George Russell in Spain, Max Verstappen now has 11 penalty points on his license over the past 12 months. If he gets one more, he’s banned from the next race.
Odds and Predictions
Oscar Piastri is favored by a decent margin over Lando Norris.
Look for Williams to bounce back this week at a track that suits their strengths.
Lance Stroll missed last race with complications from a wrist injury he suffered last year, and he’s looked out of it all year. Crazy prediction: Lance retires this week after his home race in Canada.
